LOCAL NEWS

Mont. STEELE, our down town "Cobbler" has sold his property to H. Bane HARMAN, Deputy Clerk of the county, at the price of $1,500, and it is whispered Mr. STEELE will leave us: if so some other community will get a number one mechanic..

We regret to learn that Mrs. Mary BOWEN, wife of Col. H. S. BOWEN of Wytheville is quite ill. There is not a heart in Tazewell that does not beat in sympathy with Mrs. BOWEN. No sweeter spirited woman ever blessed our society, and none ever left the county whose departure was more regretted.

Mrs. Witten CECIL and family have the sympathy of the entire circle of their acquaintance. Two weeks since Mrs. CECIL was summoned to the bedside of her step-daughter, Mrs. George MAYS - who was a citizen of Giles county. Mrs. MAYS died.

Last Sunday night Cornelius MCGUIRE, the father of Mrs. CECIL, died very suddenly, at Mrs. CECIL'S residence. Mrs. CECIL was telegraphed to return but no answer was received; and it is probable the telegram did not reach her in time if at all - till her father was buried. Mr. MCGUIRE was on of the oldest and most respected citizens of the county - a true man in all the relations of life.

A friend tells us Miss Ollie HARRISSON is rapidly gaining strength and health among the flowers, and under the genial sunshine of Florida.

It is reported unofficially that Rev. James BUSTON has purchased the Baldwin property at the price of $4,500. This worthy English family is cordially welcomed amongst us again.
