Dr. GILDERSLEEVE has been very successful within the last week - he has sold quite a number of the development companies lots.

Owing to an unfortunate accident to her eyes, Miss Lucy HENRY has been obliged to leave school. She returned home last Saturday.

We are sorry to report the death of "Aunt" Fannie WITTEN, which occurred at her home at Broad Ford, Smyth County last week. She was the devoted wife of "Clever Jim" WITTEN, who only proceeded her to the "world beyond" by a few weeks. She was also the sister of Messrs. Jesse and John A. McCALL.

Night watchman Jim FUDGE turned in an alarm of fire about 1:30 this morning. It was discovered to be at the residence adjoining the bowling alley, and most fortunately was gotten under control before any serious damage was done. It is thought this was an incendiary fire and the perpetrator attempted the destruction of the town. A more suitable place could not have been selected for the absolute wreck of the entire place.

It is with great sorrow that we report the death of this excellent gentleman at his home in the Cove, which occurred last Friday evening after a few days illness. Mr. A. WHITE was well known in our county as the owner of one of the best, if not the best, farm in the county, which he managed in a skillful and successful manner. His popularity was well manifested on the day of his funeral by the host of friends who turned out to pay their last tribute of respect to one who had been such a true friend - when to do this they had to encounter the worst storms we have had this winter. Mr. WHITE leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his loss, to whom the deep sympathy of the whole community is extended.
