GENERAL AND LOCAL NEWS

We are glad to see Mr. I.E. CHAPMAN out again after his severe sick spell of last week.

The little child of Rev. I.P. MARTIN, who has been very ill, is, we are glad to say, improving.

Mr. Ed. WITTEN is still confined to his home with the after effects of typhoid fever.

Very little interest was taken in the election in this country, as was evidenced by the light vote polled.

Dr. J.R. GILDERSLEEVE requests us to announce that there will be a meeting of the alumni of the University of Virginia at this place court day; and it is hoped they will all be present.

We have not as yet learned the program for the unveiling of the Brown monument, but hope to see a large crowd of the 'boys' who wore the gray in attendance, not only from Tazewell, but from the adjoining counties.

Mr. Chapman ALDERSON left for New York yesterday, where we understand, he has secured a good position.

There will be a game of football game at Saltville on the 15th ? the Tazewell and Saltville teams.

We had a pleasant call from Dr. CARROLL, of the Seminary, of Wednesday. The Dr. is an able educator and is spoken of very highly in the schools in which he has formerly taught.

Mr. A.P. KELLY, of Big Stone Gap, was in town first of the week. Alex looks as if teaching school agrees with him.

Mrs. George R. SURFACE, who has been unwell from some time, is improving.
