GENERAL NEWS

Miss Bessie RENWICK of Baltimore, Md. arrived Monday, the 15th to spend a few weeks with her aunt, Mrs. D. COOLEY, and other relatives in the county.  Mr. J.A. COPENHAVER, of the Cove is her this week.

Mr. John B. HURT, who was in town Tuesday, gave us the pleasing news that Miss Maude MCGUIRE, whose illness we alluded to last week is so much improved as to be thought out of danger.

Miss GLEN, who has been visiting Rev. W.C. FOSTER, was another charming young lady who left us last week. She went back to her home on the 19th.

Mrs. John SPOTTS, of Staunton Va., with her baby, is at the home of her father in law, Mr. J.C. SPOTTS, on Mechanics Avenue. She is remembered with pleasure by Tazewell people, both as Miss Davidson and in the first year of her married life.

Mrs. Elizabeth J. YOST -
This venerable lady and old citizen of Tazewell, was buried from the Methodist Church Sunday morning. Rev. Mr. Haynes preached the funeral sermon, and was assisted in the service by Revs. Martin, pastor, and Ruff of the Presbyterian Church. The death of Mrs. Yost was a surprise and a shock. It was known that she was in feeble health, but her death was not expected so soon. Her last moments were quiet and peaceful, and without a
fear she entered the dark valley and shadow fearing no evil. Mrs. Yost was born October 21st, 1829. She was the daughter of Jno. and Naomi Whitman and therefore sister to J.P. and W. Whitman. Mrs. Ellen and Mrs. Fannie Whitley, the wives of Jno. H. and Elgin Whitley respectively. In Nov. 1845, at the age of 16 years she married Wm. O. Yost, with whom she lived happily until 1890, when her husband died. She leaves four sons, John, Robert, George and William, and one daughter, Mrs. J. E. Warden. Mrs. Yost was probably the oldest citizen of Tazewell at the time of her death. She led an exemplary Christian life. Her three score and ten years were spent in Tazewell, among people who respected and loved her for her virtue, and her children will cherish her memory and treasure her example as a rich legacy.
