GENERAL NEWS

Mr. Jno. P. GOSE, of Burkes Garden, drew off his mill dam last Saturday, and caught a California trout that was nearly two feet long and weighted 50 lbs. So says Mr. Kelly GROSECLOSE.

Jno E. JACKSON has a new drink, Ginger Ale. Stimulating, invigorating, and refreshing.

One of the fondest "grand mothers" in town is Mrs. Jennie RATLIFF, who was unintentionally omitted from our roll of honor last week. As all her girls are boys she is particularly proud of her young granddaughter.

As we go to press this morning news reaches us of the death of Maj. W.P. CECIL, which occurred last night, at the home of his son in law, C.T. painter, of Ripplemeade, in Giles county. Maj. CECIL was 78 years old. He was a native of Tazewell County and lived here nearly all his life. For many years he was one of the most prominent and successful lawyers of Southwest Virginia. He also represented Tazewell in the lower house of the General Assembly several terms. His relatives in the county are numerous, and they will hear of his death with regret. With his death passes away one of the old landmarkers of our history and civilization of the past.
