A man named
HELBERT shot and seriously wounded Al BROWN, at Richlands last Monday night. As we go to press BROWN is still alive, and Dr.
WILLIAMS has some hope of his recovery. The shooting occurred after Spark's Circus had closed. We have been unable to learn the cause of the shooting.
HELBERT escaped and has not been caught.
Robert PORTER, 48 years old, died on Monday morning at his home on Cavatt's Creek, of fever. His wife is now ill from pneumonia. Mr.
PORTER leaves a wife and seven children. It will be recalled that they lost two children three years
ago, suddenly, both being buried in the same grave.
Supt. P.H. WILLIAMS says, that every teacher in the county is expected and
earnestly requested to attend at least one of the educational meetings to be held in this district this month. Not only the teachers, but every patron of every school in the county should do so. Remember the dates, Tazewell, May 23rd.

The Democrats of the town held a meeting last Saturday night in the town hall, and nominated a full Democratic ticket for the town officers. E.V.
SPOTTS was nominated for mayor. Councilmen: George W. ST.
CLAIR, Henry HAMPTON, A. ST. CLAIR, J.T. HELDRETH, Dr. J.H.
CROCKETT, and J.W. CHAPMAN. These are regarded as fine nominations, and the hope and belief in that they will be elected.
George NASH has tomato plants for sale, at 10 and 15 cents per dozen.
