GENERAL NEWS

This paper has been asked to say something about the crowd of men and boys who gather in certain quarters in this town almost daily, and sometimes on Sunday, to play marbles, wrestle and "cuss" and make trouble generally. One lady said she was afraid to go to a certain store or to allow her children to go there at certain times, on account of the rowdyism in the streets, bad language, etc. indulged in by men and boys, who have nothing to do but play marbles. This is none of the editor's business, except in so far as it effects the public. This is not the first time there has been talk. Marble playing is a pleasant, harmless game, but like anything else, can be abused as to become a nuisance and an evil. Disputes, quarrels, oaths, fights, and sometimes serious casualties, occur on these marble yards. It is the opinion expressed by several people that the quarrel which resulted in the death of GROSECLOSE last Thursday night had its beginning perhaps on the marble yard earlier in the day. We do not know how true this is, but we do know that a quarrel took place there that day, and if one man tells the truth, and is not mistaken, some of the tallest "cussin" was done ever 'heard almost, and might have produced trouble. Had not the boys better close out the marble yard?

Doc FUDGE, the one armed negro saloon keeper of Bluefield was indicted by the grand jury here this week for selling liquor in this town. FUDGE has been making frequent trips to Tazewell for a long time, loading up his victims with mean liquor, and getting the into trouble, it is said, and the authorities have had their eyes on him for some time. There has been strong suspicion for some time that he, or some other booze agent was selling liquor here on the sly under pretense of "taking orders." If FUDGE is guilty he ought to be put behind the bars. Under the law a man has a right to take orders for liquor here, or anywhere, but if a man is so greedy and unscrupulous as to violate and abuse his privileges he ought to have his privileges taken ???? him. Liquor has been the cause of a great deal of trouble in Tazewell.
