GENERAL NEWS

Robert TAFTER, Tom SMOOT, Henry BOWEN, Jo LITZ and King CROCKETT, sat down to a splendid dinner at the hospitable home of Capt. George SHAFER on last Sunday. This is one of a series of dinners which this party enjoys every now and then, first at one home then at another in the neighborhood. They never take their wives, of course, and the only lady present on these delightful occasions is the mistress of the home where the crowd meets, and of course every fellow is doubly anxious to have the meeting at the other fellows house. It is understood that an effort will be made to widen the circle so as to take in a larger number of houses, and by that means the same man's day of torture will come around less often. At all events, the boys have a fine, good social time, wherever they meet.

BURKES GARDEN

The sudden death of our much loved friend, Mrs. Cordella WATERS, has cast a shadow over the Garden, where she was honored and esteemed as a lady of the highest type. Mrs. WATERS walked out on the lawn yesterday and seemed cheerful and well. At 5 o'clock this morning she was taken suddenly ill, and despite the loving care and ministrations of both Mr. and Mrs. LAWSON, in about 30 minutes the spirit of the dear mother passed into the Beyond. The body will most likely be laid to rest here, in Burke's Garden. Mrs. WATERS leaves one daughter, Mrs. R.M. LAWSON, and one son, Mr. Tom TATERS, of Alexandria.
