GENERAL NEWS

Last Saturday evening, as Joe BOWEN and Beverly WHITE were returning from Cedar Bluff, they met Press JOHNSON, ROSE, DAVIS and CAUDILL, four well known young men of the community, and got into a slight quarrel of some kind with BOWEN and BOWEN was struck on the head with a rock, and seriously injured. The four young men are in jail here. The particulars seem to be about as follows: when the young men met on the road one of the boys asked if that was Dr. BOWEN. Joe BOWEN replied that is was not. JOHNSON said, "you are a d--- liar." BOWEN seeing the boys were under the influence of liquor decided to pass on, and not notice the insult, but on of the men called him a vile name, and he turned back to resent the insult, when some one struck him with a stone. He was hit twice, and knocked from his horse and for a time unconscious. The matter being reported to the authorities, a special grand jury was summoned on Mon., and an indictment was found and JOHNSON, DAVIS, ROSE and CAUDILL were arrested and are now in jail here.

A pretty marriage took place on Wednesday in the parlor of the Jeffersonville hotel. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Mr. HALL. The groom was Charlie G. CROCKETT, of Richlands, the bride Lina Ora GIBSON, of Swords Creek. Mr and Mrs. CALL, Swords creek were the attendants.

Moses W. HUMPHREY, one of the best men in the county, died last night at his home near Liberty Hill, after brief illness from typhoid fever. This news will be a great shock to his host of friends and acquaintances. Mr. HUMPHREY was about 47 years of age, and leaves a wife and ten children. The funeral and burial will take place this afternoon from his late residence. In his death the county loses one of her truest and best citizens. His family and friends have the deepest sympathy of the community.

Mr. Williams MULLIN, one of the best known citizens of the Falls Mills community, died last Monday at the home of his sister, Miss Amie MULLIN, near that place in the 60th year of his age. The funeral and burial service took place on Sept. 1st. Mr. MULLIN is survived by two sisters, Miss Amie, and Mrs. W.C. TABOR, of Goodes, Va. and by two children, Annie - a young daughter, and Grat M. MULLIN, assistant cashier of the Tazewell National Bank. He was a consistent member of the Christian church, an upright, popular man, and his death was a shock and great grief to the community.
