Expected Mr. Doak - Graham
letter in Bluefield Telegraph. – The nomination of Rev.
C. R. Brown, of
Tazewell, for the state senate from this, the third district, came
rather as a surprise to the local Democrats, as it had been predicted
that the sentiment in the county favorable to Bill
Doak would manifest itself sufficiently strong to bring about the
nomination of Mr. Doak.
The nomination was simply approved by the Tazewell county
committee, the arrangement agreed upon by the counties of Russell,
Dickenson and Buchanan having given the Tazewell county committee the
privilege of naming the candidate.
The Graham Democrats’ endorsement in caucus of Mr. Doak
did not appear to amount to anything after all.
While there has not been any intimation that Mr. Brown will not receive the full party strength in Tazewell county,
some of the party leaders do not hesitate to express their opinion
upon the choice of the committee and claim that Mr. Doak
was entitled to the nomination in view of the fact that it was he who
agreed to make the race first, which is really looked upon as a kind
of a sacrifice to run on the Democratic ticket in this district.
It is also argued by Mr. Doak’s
friends that he has been county chairman and a zealous worker for his
party, that he has not heretofore offered for political honors of any
kind and that he at
least
merited the empty honor of making the race for senate against J.
Powell Royall.
Rev. Mr. Brown is a
well known citizen of Tazewell courthouse.
At one time he was an active minister of the Methodist church.
He married a daughter of the late John
Cooper.
Mrs. I.
H. Sutphin has decided
to move to
Mount
Hope
and take charge of the hotel property at that place.
She will leave Graham next week with the family for her new
home. Mrs. Sutphin has
never failed to make a success of the various hotels she has managed
and it goes without saying that she will be equally as successful at
Mount
Hope
as in her previous ventures. Squire
Johnathan Boyd will assume
control of the Graham hotel, which he recently purchased.
