GENERAL NEWS

One of the tragedies of the fire at North Tazewell last Thursday afternoon was the destruction of the wedding presents of Mr. and Mrs. MCKENRY, Mrs. MCKENRY being the daughter of W.A. SCOTT, proprietor of the Tazewell Manufacturing Company. The presents, consisting of a great many valuable gifts, had been stored in the warehouse where they were soon to be packed for shipping. They were in an upper story of the building.

A report is in circulation that efforts are being made by cities adjacent to Tazewell to include the Tazewell Manufacturing Company to rebuild its plant in one of these towns. The offers are said to be very attractive to Mr. SCOTT, and he may give them serious consideration. The Tazewell Manufacturing Company, which, before the big fire last week, employed twenty or more men, had the largest pay roll of any other concern either in Tazewell or North Tazewell, and its loss to the town of North Tazewell would be irrespirable. Efforts should be made by the business men of the two towns to secure the new building for North Tazewell, and the authorities of our sister town should offer every inducement that is reasonable to have this fine concern relocate in the town. The Tazewell-North Tazewell Board of Trade had better be revived and get busy. It is also reported that Mr. George W. ST. CLAIR is seriously considering moving the offices of the Virginia Smokeless Coal Company to Bluefield within the next few months. This would be a loss to Tazewell, and it is hoped that such change may not take place.

Mr. S.J. THOMPSON and Oscar BARNS, of the Cove, have purchased a large farm near Mt. Jackson, in Shenandoah County, consisting of 800 acres. Mr. BARNS will take charge of the farm and Mr. THOMPSON will run Mr. BARNS in the Cove. The new purchase is a grain farm, but will be converted into a stock farm, not grazing but feeding. Mr. THOMPSON said that 600 acres of the Shenandoah farm can be plowed with a tractor, practically level, 200 acres about, in woods. The consideration was $100,000.00. Mr. BARNS is moving with his family to the new farm.
