GENERAL NEWS

Garnett HICKS, Lowe MALLORY and John NIPPER, three young men of Richlands, each eighteen years of age, were arrested in that town Tuesday and brought to jail here charged with robbing the store of C.G. HURT at Wardell. They carried away shoes, overalls, shirts and cigarettes, the larger part of the booty being composed of the latter. They were tried in Richlands previous to being brought to jail here by J.B. MUTTER, who committed them to await the action of the grand jury.

Mr. and Mrs. NIPPER, parents of one of the boys, were here Wednesday afternoon and endeavored to have their son released on bond, but were unable to do so. They hoped to secure bond for their son. This office is in receipt of a lengthy letter from "Judge" J.H. NIPPER, of Cedar Bluff, in which he states that he wants it understood that the John Henry NIPPER mentioned above is not his son, and we hasten to state that the Cedar Bluff citizen is in no way connected with the robbery of the store at Wardell. It is a singular coincidence that the father of the boy arrested is also named John H. NIPPER, the same name as the former magistrate at Cedar Bluff. Mr. E.A. NIPPER, who lives near Cedar Bluff, a son of former magistrate John H. NIPPER, is a young man highly esteemed in his community.

Bunyan YATES, a well known citizen of Baptist Valley, who was charged with selling liquor, was tried Tuesday and found not guilty. D.B REYNOLDS, who was arrested near Unaka recently charged with transporting liquor, was also tried and found not guilty. The following persons have been sentenced for violating the prohibition laws: Thirty days and fifty dollars fine for the following: Ras SHRADER, John HAYS, Andy DAY, Robert HARRIS, J.G. CUSINS, Hop BROWN, Silas PRUETT, Will HADEN, Steve ELLIS, Charles PAULEY, John WILKERSON, Lindsey BEAVERS, W.T. ADAMS. Willard SHRADER received ninety days and costs.

Bill HART, charged with feloniously assaulting the Richlands Policeman, officer YOST, from which he subsequently died, was brought to jail here last week from California to answer the charge. There are a number of other men implicated in the affair.
