Bunyan YATES and Walter
SIMPSON, two well known citizens of this community, were convicted in the Tazewell Circuit Court this week of violating the prohibition laws, and given sentences on the county roads and fines.
YATES was given ninety days and $350 fine and SIMPSON ninety days and $250 fine. An effort will be made by their counsel to have the verdicts set aside for legal reasons. A majority of the people of the county are much in sympathy with the verdict of the two juries who tried these cases. The jury in the
YATES case were: John W. LONG, W.G. COX, John SIX, G.A.
FRENCH, and S. Herbert HEDRICK in the Simpson Case: J.A.
PAYNE, John H. DURHAM, A.J. COLEMAN, Walter W. RHUDY.
Dr. HENDERSON, of the Southwest Asylum at Marion, and Dr. J.C. KING, who operates a private hospital at Radford, were called here as
alienists in the MITCHELL case, and decided that MITCHELL was sane.
MITCHELL was indicted for shooting James ARMSTRONG at Pocahontas, and confessed to the crime, and the court sentenced him to twenty years in the penitentiary.
Marion SLEDD, who killed Peel HARMAN near the former's home on Cavitt's Creek several weeks ago, was tried in the Circuit Court here and last Saturday night, the jury, after several hours deliberation, returned a verdict of guilty of manslaughter and fixed his punishment at one year in the penitentiary and $500 fine. It is stated that the verdict of the jury was satisfactory to both the defendant and the state.
