GENERAL NEWS
A prisoner in the county jail complained to jailor BARNETT that he had toothache and asked for the privilege of visiting the
dentist. An engagement was made and the dentist for one o'clock Sunday, and the jailor was walking beside the prisoner on the way to the dentist but when the party reached the alley between the courthouse and Jeff
WARD'S store, the prisoner remarked to himself that Rich Mountain looked good to him, and right then the desire for freedom seized him and away he went. The jailor took a couple of cracks at him with his artillery; but his marksmanship wasn't very good and he missed. The whizz of bullets close to the prisoner's person gave him more power and he threw into high gear and was gone from here. The jailor, who has run a better foot race in time past than he can now, was soon out distanced, and other officers in the community took up the race and caught up with the runner on the hills near town. He was brought back, apparently free from the pains of the aching tooth, and put back to bid his time. The so-called toothache is said to have been a ruse.

A proposal will be made to the State Highway Commission to continue the new highway,
recently designated from a point west of Tazewell to the Lynch estate, a few miles further to the top of the mountain on the line between Tazewell and Smyth counties, an estimated distance of about eight miles, the new road to be known as the "Buchanan Train" in memory of the late Senator B.F.
BUCHANAN, of Smyth County, a distinguished citizen of the Southwest for many years and interested always in the advancement of the
interests of the people, especially in the development of the road system. The suggestion has been made here that a meeting be held soon in Thompson Valley, and an organization effected to work on the scheme. Already a number of people have interested
themselves in the project, and its eventual success can be assured by co-operative effort. Local organization, instrumental recently in advancing causes which they thought for the benefit of the people, will get behind the proposed new road and make use of its organized forces to advance the scheme. A modern highway running south to Marion would be of much advantage to
the people of both counties, and serve a large population, and touch a section of the county that has not
benefited in recent highway allotments. It is believed by those in touch with the situation that such schemes will receive favorable consideration by the highway Commission in view of the recent liberality by Congress in making available money for highway construction to relieve the
unemployment situation. Further announcement of the proposed meeting will be made.
