RAVEN
Mr. and Mrs. George W. ROBINSON and family, while driving a Dodge sedan automobile, owned and operated by
Mr.. ROBINSON, popular merchant of this place, miraculously escaped death or serious injury the
past Sunday afternoon while out driving when a car driven by a son of Arthur CHRISTIAN, of Baptist Valley, accidentally backed into the side of the
ROBINSON car as it was passing the parked car of Mr. CHRISTIAN. The accident occurred directly opposite the post office building at Doran. After the accident
CHRISTIAN fled in the direction of Richlands in his car unrecognized by the occupants of the damaged car, but the number of his license plate was obtained by Robinson, which cased his arrest later in the evening by deputy sheriff J.B.
MCGRAW, of this place and State policeman Ed WITTEN of Tazewell, and lodged in jail at Richlands, charged with operating a car while under the influence of intoxicating lequor, reckless driving and as a hit and run driver.
CHRISTIAN was released on bond late Sunday evening.
A committee of workers of the Red Cross chapter of west Raven were in attendance at a call meeting held at Lebanon on Friday of last week with Miss Elizabeth
LARRY, Red Cross field nurse of Russell County, presiding. Those present from west Raven were: Mrs. Alice
MAYNARD, Elizabeth COMPTON, Jonas WHITT, Dexter BEAVERS, John
REED and Kelley FIELDS. An interesting meeting with several splendid lectures presented by members was reported.
In commemorating the days of autumn and years past, William JACKSON of Daw, gave an old time husking bee at his home, at that place on Tuesday. Everybody was cordially
welcomed and a large crowd of corn huskers from the community at large was present to swap yearns and
husk corn while the women prepared a dinner, nothing short of a feast, and talked about their neighbors.
Elma, small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas WALTERS, of Premier Red Ash, received severe wounds about the hands and wrist last the past Saturday afternoon when she accidentally fell while descending some dilapidated wooden steps
adjoining the state highway with the Premier Red Ash Coal company's dwelling houses. The child is thought to have cut her hand upon a piece of broken glass.
News of the death of Mrs. John HIGGS of near Swords Creek, was received by friends and relatives here on Monday. Mrs.
HIGGS died at her home early Sunday morning, victim of affirmatives of age. She had been confined to her bed for several months with a broken hip, received by a fall down the steps of her home. Interment was made in the family cemetery Monday afternoon. She is survived by, besides her husband, two daughters and several sisters and brothers. Among those attending the
funeral from here were: Mrs. Frank REEDY, and aged lady of west Raven and sister-in-law of the deceased.
Miss Mary SHORT and brother, Jim, of Clintwood, were guests of Misses Ella and Adele
REEDY in west Raven over the weekend, Miss SHORT, a student nurse of the Mattie Williams hospital in Richlands, was enroute from her home to Richmond, where she will take examinations of the state board of nursing. She was accompanied by her brother and Miss Ella
REEDY, departing Monday.
At a committee meeting of the west Raven chapter of Red Cross, which was held at the home of Mrs. Alice
MAYNARD on Monday, work with started upon some quilts to be made by the members and given to the needy as Christmas presents.
Bart, small son of Mr. and Mrs. John ELSWICK, of Red Ash, and student of the Red Ash, graded school, received a severe wound of the head Tuesday morning when he accidentally fell against the sharp corner of a coal house at school, cutting a deep wound across the forehead and left eye. Medical aid was summoned immediately and the lad is reported recuperating nicely at present.
John CROCKETT, former mine foreman of Premier Red Ash coal company's operation, resigned the former part of last month an has accepted a position as mine foreman at Amonate. He moved his family from Premier to that operation this week. Thomas SIMMONS citizen of near Red Ash for several years, accepted the foremanship at Premier.
A three-act mystery play, entitled, "Such a Night," was presented in the Honaker High School auditorium in Honaker by members of the local chapter of the Epworth League, the past Friday evening. The play is expected to be presented in neighboring towns immediately after the Christmas holidays are over.
Due to the increment changing weather that has prevailed throughout this section for the past two weeks, many cases of colds, influenza and pneumonia have been reported. The disease seems to be confined to children of school age.
Miss Carrie REEDY spent the weekend at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs.. Henry ROBINSON, of near Swords Creek.
Miss Emma IAMAN, principal of the Raven graded school, has been confined to her bed this week suffering with influenza.
The small baby of Mr. and Mrs. William MULLINS, of the Mullins Lumber company, near Red Ash, continues seriously ill of pneumonia at home.
Miss Elizabeth b, of Lebanon, was guest of Mrs. Alice MAYNARD, of west Raven, Tuesday night.
Mrs. Hyder WILSON continues ill at her home in west Raven.
Miss Edith MAYS, teacher of the local school spent the weekend at the home of her parents in Honaker.
Ed HAND was visiting his aunt, Mrs. J.A. GILLESPIE, of Red Root Ridge, last week.
Mrs. Clarence HEDGES, of Premier, Red Ash and mother, Mrs. W.B. RINGSTAFF, of Richlands, were visiting in Beckley, West Virginia, last week.

A Christmas tree and entertainment is to be held in the Pocahontas Baptist church on Christmas night, and committees have been appointed to work out the different phases of the program. Committees have been appointed on entertainment, one of the secure the tree, and one of finance the event. This is an annual event at the church and is looked forward to with much interest by the members. Full details of the program are expected to be available in the next few days.

The plant of the Two-States Dry Cleaning Co. owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Ward
DENNINSON, was destroyed by fire early last Sunday morning. The building belonged to the Tynes estate. There was no insurance in either that plant or the building. The origin of the fire is unknown. A number of the friend of Mr. and Mrs.
DENNINSON have rallied to their support since the fire, making it possible for them to re-enter business here. They have leased the building in the rear of the Jeffersonville Hotel, and have secured equipment for the new plant, which is expected to be in place and ready for business by Monday.
