RAVEN

The Raven precinct voted Democratic in the recent election for the first time in the history of the town. The final report gave Roosevelt and Flannagan a 21 majority over their opponents, Hoover and Chase. The election passed quietly without any disturbance of violet nature.

Miss Emma INMAN, principal of the Raven school and Samuel GILLESPIE accompanied Miss Agnes INMAN to her home at Max Meadows the past Friday evening spending the weekend at the home of Miss INMAN.

W.L. JUSTICE, Henry MUIRE and Ed HAND were business visitors in Tazewell, Tuesday.

Mr. and Mrs. R.H. HAND and daughter "Pete" of Roaring Fork, spent the weekend at the home of Mr. HAND'S mother, Mrs. U.S. in Premier.

Mrs. Sarah J. ROBINSON, of this place, who has been on an extended visit to her children near Swords Creek, returned to the home of her son, George W. ROBINSON, this week.

Mrs. Harry TARTER, Mrs. T.M. HARRIS, of Richlands and Miss Elma GILLESPIE, of this place, were visiting friends and relatives in Premier Red Ash, the past week.

William WILSON was a business visitor in Tazewell Saturday.

Mrs. W.D. JONES, of Gratton, and Mr. and Mrs. W.M. PRUETT were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. S.E. LEFFEL Sunday. Callers in the afternoon were Mr. and Mrs. Bill PRUETT and Mr. and Mrs. Roy LEFFEL, of Bluefield, Va. Mr. and Mrs. H.M. KINSER and Mr. and Mrs. A.L. LEFFEL.

Miss Margaret HAGER spent the weekend in the home of Miss Nell HUMPHREY at Liberty.

The woman's missionary society of Kinser's Chapel met this month with Mrs. Grace COMPTON.

Mrs. E.G. PRUETT is able to be out again after being confined to her home with a cold.

Mr. and Mrs. Buford BOURNE were weekend visitors with Mrs. BOURNE'S parents Mr. and Mrs. W.L. SHAWVER.

Miss Mary Helen GRUBB was the weekend guest of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. SANDERS, of Tazewell.

Mrs. S.E. LEFFEL and daughter, Geraldine, were shopping in Tazewell Tuesday.

Mr. and Mrs. W.L. SHAWVER were in Bluefield Sunday visiting relatives.

George LAMBERT has been very sick for the past week.

Mrs. I.B. MITCHELL gave a party for the young folks Saturday night. A large number attended and reported a nice time.

Bob MITCHELL and wife and little son of Raven, were visiting Mr. MITCHELL'S mother here Sunday.

John WHITT and wife of Raven, were visiting Mrs. I.B. MITCHELL on Sunday.

Fred MARTIN and Ed MARTIN, of Russell County, were visiting their sister, Saturday and Sunday, Mrs. I.B. MITCHELL, also Mr. Euick ATKINS, of Russell, was a visitor.

Jack MITCHELL and Mrs. MITCHELL and daughter and Carl KINDER and wife, daughter and son were visiting Sunday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy GRIFFIN.

Miss Ada MITCHELL is taking her second year in the business college at Fredericksburg and is expected home Christmas.

E.T. NECESSARY left Sunday for his work in West Virginia.

T.M. NECESSARY and son, Harry, have gone to West Virginia to work.

Mrs. Lina MITCHELL has been on the sick list, but is improving.

POUNDING MILL

Rev. LeRoy HANKINS, Methodist minister, will preach here Sunday night at union church.

Rev. L.L. VAUGHT, of Marion, State overseer of Church of God, preached his last sermon here Sunday at 11 and Sunday night. His sermons were fine. Rev. T.W. HARMAN, of Hillsborough, Md., will continue the meeting over Sunday.

Christian Endeavor at union church Tuesday night led by Mildred RILEY. Short talks by Rev. George OWENS. The Endeavor sold good eats Tuesday to the voters. $10.00 was taken in.

W.M.S. of Christian church was held at union church Wednesday PM., with Mrs. James BRUSTER, leader, Others in program, Miss Ruth RINGSTAFF, pianist, Mr. C.H. ROBINETTE, Mrs. L.W. RINGSTAFF, Mrs. M.H. CHRISTIAN, Mrs. C.H. ROBINETTE and Mrs. W.B. STEELE.

The following ladies from here attended the all day Methodist Missionary meeting at Pisgah today: Mrs. James JOHNSON, Mrs. Hurley MCGEE, Mrs. R.A. CRAIG, Mrs. Hallie McGEE and Mrs. Jim HUNTER.

GENERAL NEWS

John MOORE, a former citizen of Tazewell, well known painter died on Monday at his home at English, West Virginia. He had been ill for several months and death was due to cancer. A few months ago one of his arms was removed in hopes of stopping the dreadful disease from spreading, but without avail. Mr. MOORE was married twice, his first wife being Miss Mollie DAUGHERTY, who died 23 years ago. Seven children were born to this union, who are: Mrs. W.S. WILSON, of War, West Virginia; G.S. MOORE, of War; J.W. MOORE, Bluefield, Va.; Jim and Sam MOORE, Birmingham, Alabama; Mrs. R.D. TATE, Bluefield, West Virginia; Mrs. C.A. SITES, Salem, Va. His second wife, whom he married eighteen years ago, was Mrs. John NEWTON, of Tazewell, and one child was born to this union, who also survives, John MOORE, Jr. One brother, Will MOORE, well known tinner, of this town. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in the Tazewell Christian church at 2 o'clock, and burial in Maple Shade cemetery.

Elijah VANCE, charged with shooting Robert RYE in an altercation near the filling station on top of Stony Ridge, surrendered Wednesday morning to Sergeant PHILLIPS at North Tazewell. He secured bond and was released for appearance in court here this term for trial. The men were said to have been drinking when the shooting occurred.

Bob PRESSLEY, Bill and Lindsay PRESSLEY were arrested recently near North Tazewell, and in the car in which they were riding eighteen gallons of hooch was seized. Bob PRESSLEY was fined $100 and given six months; the other two are listed for trial in Circuit Court.

Walter EASTWOOD, a former pastor of the Tazewell M.E. Church, later of Radford, now presiding elder of the Big Stone Gap District, came home to vote on Tuesday. Bishop EASTWOOD has twenty-eight preachers to watch in Wise County, which means that he will be a busy man for the next year or so.

Isaiah, HARRY and Ed BUCKLAND brought the "polls" to Tazewell Wednesday. "They" were Democratic as usual. HARRY still claims ownership of the championship cow of the East end of the county, and BUCKLAND nodded his assent, which settles the matter.

We wish to express our great appreciation for the kindness and thoughtfulness shown us by our many friends, during the recent death of our dear son and brother. Also we greatly appreciated the floral tributes. John R. PACK and family.

The home of Mrs. Matilda EARLY, on Sunday, was the scene of much gayety among the descendents of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel WILLIAMS, who gathered to the number of about fifty. The occasion was timed to honor the birth anniversary of three of the grandchildren of this late couple. Among the interesting features of the entertainment program was the performances of the seven piece orchestra, composed of the children of Mr. and Mrs. SUTHERLAND, of Bedford. A picnic lunch was served.

Zirk EARLES, 14 year old son of Tom EARLES, died Wednesday morning at his home at North Tazewell, from an illness of Several weeks. Funeral services will he held Friday from the home of his grandmother, Mrs. Tim HANKINS, in Newtown, near North Tazewell. Interment will be made in the family cemetery.

Mr. Eugene CROCKETT, of the Pocahontas Fuel Co., of Bishop, was a visitor in Tazewell on Wednesday.

Captain Reese BOWEN, veteran N. & W. conductor, was in Tazewell visiting in the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.G. O'BRIEN, Tuesday.

Attorney H. Claude POBST, of Grundy, was a Tazewell visitor on last Thursday.

W.L. ("Jug" MAY, secretary to Congressman John W. FLANNAGAN,) spent the weekend in Tazewell.

Mr. and Mrs. MCAMOS, of Kingsport, Tenn, spent the weekend in Tazewell as the guests of Mrs. MCAMOS' parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.W. JONES.

Mr. Reece BAILEY continues to improve from his recent illness, at his home on Tazewell avenue.

A.L. SCHAFFER, of Freeburn, Ky. is visiting Mr. and Mrs. R.C. COOPER.

Mrs. T.E. LAMBERT, Ruth and Gratton LAMBERT and Ella ALTIZER attended the football game at Williamson Friday night.

Miss Louise COOPER spent the weekend with homefolks near Gratton.

Mr. R.P. JOHNSON, of Wytheville, was in Tazewell Wednesday on business.

Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Everett CALLAWAY, of Bluefield, Va. a fine son, named Everett CALLAWAY, Jr. Mrs. CALLAWAY before her marriage was Miss Amelia JOHNSON, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.N. JOHNSON, of Tazewell.

Mr. Wilkinson HAMPTON, of Asheville, N.C. will be the guest of his sister, Mrs. Nell EDWARDS, of the jean Coue Beauty Shoppe, over this weekend.

Miss Elizabeth STEELE, teacher in the Big Stone Gap High School, will spend the weekend here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred R. STEELE. Miss STEELE will have as her guests Misses GILMER, FISHER and WINSTON, teachers in the Big Stone Gap High School.

Bill HARMAN, student of Duke University, is spending a few days at his home here.

Misses Evelyn and Elizabeth RUSS, teachers in Richlands and Horsepen schools, spent last weekend in Tazewell.

Arthur LEWIS, special officer for the Pocahontas Fuel Co., at Bishop, was in Tazewell this week.

Mr. and Mrs. S.A. REESE, of Lynchburg, who were called here on account of the death of Mrs. REESE'S mother, Mrs. S.A. WITTEN, have returned to their home.

The Pocahontas Fuel Company is making preparations for the opening of a new mine near Horsepen. Steel for the railroad is now being put in place. The new mine will be located near Horsepen, close to the store of Frank DANIEL. The mine will probably be put into operation in about a year.

I.H. HARRY, well known merchant of Falls Mills, was in town Wednesday. He reported the election went off quietly at his precinct.

Clarence HELDRETH, local contractor, who has been in a Bluefield hospital suffering from injuries sustained in an auto accident three weeks ago, will be brought to his home here Saturday. His condition is said to have greatly improved.

B.C. TYNES and Houston LAIRD drove over the Tazewell last week in a new Cadillac car. Evidently Buford was confident of Roosevelt's election for he would have continued to ride the old boat.

Mrs. C.H. PEERY Jr. is spending some time with friends and relatives in Ceres.

Mrs. A.Z LITZ and daughter, Miss Daisy LITZ are spending some time visiting in Huntington. They were also visiting in Charleston and Washington.

Mrs. Frank LEWIS, who has been making her home with her son, Victor LEWIS, at Tip Top, left Wednesday for Kansas City, where she will make her home with her son at that place.

Mr. and Mrs. Bernard BEASLEY were Tazewell Visitors this week in home of Mr. and Mrs. A.Z. LITZ.

John DICKENSON is the guest of his son, L.L. DICKENSON and family at North Tazewell. Mr. DICKENSON is of that numerous and prominent family of Russell County. He is now a member of the household of his daughter, Mrs. W.D. BELON at Johnson City, Tenn.

J. Harvey GILLENWATERS, for many years a resident of North Tazewell, who now resides in Pulaski, following the precedent established when leaving Tazewell, came back to cast his ballot.

COVE CREEK

Mr. and Mrs. Guy BRUCE, of Bastian, Va. spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. R.C. FOX at Cove Creek, Va.

Miss Jessie FOX, who is attending Bland High School, spent the weekend with her parents at Cove Creek, Mr. and Mrs R.C. FOX.

POCAHONTAS

The Sunday school rooms of the Methodist Church have been converted into a sewing room, in ?  on the first five afternoons of each week. Monday through Friday, the women of the community will meet to cut out garments and sew for the poor. The hours are from 2 o'clock until 5 o'clock. The Red Cross has furnished the material, and Mrs. J.P. CURTIS is serving as chairman of the relief work.

Mrs. A.S. PEERY, of Bluefield, Va., formerly of Pocahontas, visited friends in town Thursday.

Misses Reba KEESSE, Virginia BERNARD and MCUING, of Bluefield, visited Mr. and Mrs. J.W. DEATON last Sunday.

Mrs. Herbert BUTT spent last weekend in Wytheville, with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.J.B. SHARITZ. She was accompanied home by her son, Hal, who has been visiting his grandparents for several days.

Mrs. C.E. LAWRENCE and Mrs. Clifford LAWRENCE, of Bluestone, were shopping in town last week.

Mr. and Mrs. M.E. BLAYLOCK and Mrs. Jack TOTRIA visited Mr. and Mrs. J.W. BEAVERS in Welch Wednesday night.

Mrs. Jennings McNEIL and little son, Charles, are spending the week in Bluefield with Mrs. MCNEIL'S mother, Mrs. George SCOTT.

Mrs. Sol BAACH has been confined to her home several days this week, on account of illness.

Ed KEESELING, of Roanoke, was a business visitor in town last week.

Joe LESTER, who has been a patient in the Bluefield sanitarium for several weeks suffering from injuries received in an auto wreck recently, has returned home.

Andrew GEISEN, who has been in Richmond from some time, returned home recently.

Mrs. L.B. COEBURN, Miss Fern COEBURN, Miss BANE and John FRENCH, of Narrows, visited Mrs. and Mrs. Sol BAACH last Saturday.

Mrs. J.K. PETERS is able to be out again after several weeks illness. 

Miss Esther LUBLINER, of Bluefield, was the guest of Miss Esther MAGRIL last week.

Mr. and Mrs. Frannk LAFON, of Bluefield; Mrs. Snow LAFON and Mr. and Mrs. Warner BALL were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. MCCROSKEY, Sunday.

Miss Lois SIMON spent last weekend with Mr. and Mrs. R.L. SIMMONS, Mrs. SIMMONS returned with her to spend a few days with relatives.

Mrs. E.H. HALL was visiting relatives in Bluefield the first of the week.
