John R. GRINDSTAFF,
77 years of age, died last Saturday at this home on Cavitts Creek. He was a
native of Carter County, Tennessee. He is survived by his wife, the former Josie
TAYLOR, of North Carolina, three daughters and six sons: Jerome, Frank
A., David A., Woodrow and John Jr., all of North Tazewell and Charles, of
Radford; Mrs. W. B. CREGAR, of Bishop; Mrs. C.E. WITTEN and Miss
Nancy GRINDSTAFF, both of North Tazewell. The six GRINDSTAFF
brothers were members of the armed forces in WWII. Funeral services were
conducted Monday from the North Tazewell Methodist Church, with the Rev. W. E. JELF
in charge.
William M. LANKFORD died last Wednesday morning at his home in North
Tazewell, following an illness of two years. He was a native of Tazewell but had
made his home in Bluefield WV during most of his life. Funeral services were
held last Friday afternoon from the North Tazewell Methodist Church, with the
Rev. Clyde WATKINS and the Rev. W.E. JELF officiating. He is
survived by his wife, the former Miss Mary E. HILL, and three children,
William M. Jr. and Mrs. Dorothy KELLEY, of Lorrain, Ohio, and Johnny, at
home. There also survives his mother, Mrs. Ervin LANKFORD, of Bluefield,
and the following brothers and sisters, Miss Nellie LANKFORD and Mrs.
Grace Romeo, of Bluefield; Mrs. Stella Witt of North Tazewell; Luther Lankford,
of Cleveland Ohio, and John Lankford, of Tazewell.
Minnis LAWSON, a former citizen of Burke's Garden, died suddenly last
Saturday in Baltimore, Md. He was 53 years of age. When a young man Mr. LAWSON
was a missionary, stationed at Grenfel, Alaska for a number of years. Upon
returning to the United States he located in Baltimore where he engaged in real
estate and financial market and was a partner with a companion missionary in the
Lycett Gift Shop, which was named for his partner. His is survived by his widow
and a sister, Miss Garnett LAWSON, of Wytheville. Mr. LAWSON was a
son of the late Mr. and Mrs. R.M. LAWSON of Burke's Garden. Burial was in
Wytheville.
